as others have said, sounds like heater control valve or the rod that connects said valve to the dial you mentioned is disconnected.
a couple of observations you can make: remove the left front speaker cover, using a flashlight look in the opening while turning the heat/cool dial back and forth. it will help you find control valve, some are orange on one end and either black or white on the other. you should be able to see the rod turn, if it doesn't it's either disconnected at the dial or the keyed fitting is broken, this sometimes happens when the heater control valve is frozen. *on the other hand*, if the heatercontrol valve is working, and the rod appears to turn, perhaps the guys of the control valve are stuck. you can try this, something you have to do anyway if replacing the valve. one extra step. go to autoparts store and get a piece of plastic 90 degree or 180 degree hose. if unsure of the size get someone from the store to come and look, it's the two black hoses that go into the firewall, one is directly over the other, they are on the left side of the car very near the AC compressor. The idea is you are going to remove the two hoses and use the plastic bit you bought as a bypass. If this makes you heated air go cold you need to replace the valve. ALSO, keep the plastic bit, maybe in your trunk in the tire well. Someday, somewhere the heater control valve will start leaking hot smelly coolant on your feet. This is a great way to get home, no heat but you can get home.
