CMyles is right on target. I had the same problem and actually replaced the right bearing twice thinking that I had a bad replacement. More fun with my hydraulic press.
The left wheel bearing growl can sound like it is coming from the right side of the car...from the driver's seat. A passenger might correctly hear it from the left. Also, sometimes the growl and vibration will occur when the bearing is loaded and sometimes when unloaded.
If turning a jacked up wheel by hand doesn't detect the roughtness, the stethoscope method will pin it down. With jack stands or blocks, get both sides of the front end in the air and take the wheels off. Put the car in third gear or drive with the engine running, so the hubs spin in the air with the tires off. If you touch the listening device to the steering knuckle, you will hear the bad side rumble(I always use a long screwdriver and hold the handle to my ear, or use a length of tubing).
Be careful not to hit the spinning hub with the listening device, a startling experience.
