I just got through completely rebuilding a set of fron calipers for my 85 and replacing my rubber lines.

The inside of the lines will deteriorate, act like a one way valve and cause the brakes to drag. This is usually worse on one side or the other.

The 85 calipers have the E-brake in the front. The part that sticks out of the caliper and is slotted to the yoke is a pressed on sleve that is pressed onto a piston. That psiton is not the piston that actuates the pads. Fluid forces the two pistons apart. The piece that is part of the ebrake contains three ball bearings and a rotating disk that forces a rod towards the the piston when the lever is pulled. That actuates the brakes mechanically when you pull the E-brake lever.

That sleeve, piston, bearings and disc are supposed to be packed with grease. When I disassembled mine, the grease had turned to rusty dirt. I had to disassemble three of those to get parts to make one good one. I didn't realize they came apart at first because the one I was trying to replace was in such bad shape.

So I gues where I'm going with this is that if you have 85 calipers, I'd rebuild or replace them along with any rubber lines.

If you do here's a fresh tip. When you remove the caliper, disconnect the hose at the caliper and cap it with a large rubber vacuum nipple.

Assemble the new/rebuilt caliper and yoke including the mounting brackets just as if you were getting ready to slide it on the hub. Loosely connect the new brake line so its almost tight but spins freely. With that assembly in your lap, remove the rubber line from the car at the inner fender and then you can attach the new line without getting brake fluid everywhere.
