93 900 shift linkage problem

this problem happened several months ago; I've parked the car in the interim but now that weather is getting better I'd like to address the problem.
What is happening is that 1-2-R cannot be selected and the lever has a very rubbery feel. At first 2 could be selected but now that wont work either. Back when this happened (Nov, early Dec) I posted here and someone told me there was a rubber-metal piece (presumably a mount of some sort) accessible from underneath that could be removed with a 10mm wrench and that that part had likely failed. Having had a Mini in the old days, i know about such failures <G> and the symptoms sort of sound like a mount/joint failure.
I just crawled under the beast and can see no such piece. The shaft disappears into the diff/engine/trans housing at the rear of the diff-engine-trans lump and then view is occluded by a skid plate and other stuff. If there is such a piece (as described) in the 93 900 classic where might it be?
Bentley does not refer to any such piece. And the procedure for adjusting the linkage refers to special tools (shift rod alignment tool #87 91 576).
