It sounds to me like they've got at least one fact wrong because it's impossible to get a 900 with a vinyl interior in this country. The cloth is great and the leather is the fancy option.
The wrist pin is the pin that holds the cylindrical part of the piston to the connecting rod. If the wrist pins wear (and develop "slap") the piston can move up and down (and diagonally) independent of the connecting rod independent of what the controlling rod is doing on every piston stroke. It will sound like something is loose inside the engine because something is.
Valve noise is just a knocking noise that may or may not go away after the oil passages bleed any accumulated air out of themselves. Be sure there is oil in the engine and fire it up to see what it sounds like. In my experience, piston slap is a sign of an abused or neglected motor, but it is possible the owners simply adhered to the new 10k oil change interval over the life of the motor. Valve lifters can be changed pretty easily, but if the pistons are flopping around it is indeed a parts car.
