I have an 89 900s, and the gear selector was out of alignment to the shift column. Park was a hard park, reverse was were neutral was & had to wait 10 seconds or so till it caught and did reverse. Neutral was were D is, D is were 2 is.
After about 1/2 year of this annoyance, and a day off from work, I took it to the local Saab foreign shop and in about 1/2 hour the GEAR SELECTOR CABLE was adjusted and reset. Bentleys explains how to do it, just didn't want to hassle with it, cost $60. What A Difference. Now the button tab on top of the shifter pops up like it should when in gear, reverse is immediate, and all gears match the column.
If I were you, I would have this done, and while it is being done, take out the front seat, disconnect the heater connection, and have an new ignition switch installed, new key ala security, and clean thouroughly.
