What surprises me is that you say the tranny shifts into second gear fine.
Because it almost sounds like the second gear missing syndrome where you start in first gear and then when it tries to find second, it is nothing there and you have to rev the car higher and higher up in speed and when you let off the trottle you have high enough speed forward that the transmission shift into third bypassing the second gear all together.
That is an internal brake band problem and rebuild is needed.
So if you do infact have a properly working second gear, my next suggestion would be to take a good look at the kick down wire.
Sometimes, the kick down wire sheating comes loose from the nipple/bracket that is held in place at the throttle linkage.
When that happens, it pulls out the kick down wire, so the transmission thinks it is in kick down mode (full throttle) and it will hold on to each gear for dear life and only shift to next when it absolutly have to.
I just corrected a problem like that last week where another oil changing place had dislocated that kick down wire when pulling out the oil filter.
I got the cable sheating back into the bracket and the transmission shifted good again.
