I can relate because my first Saab was an '84 4-door 900S. I bought this thing for $600 in college and it actually had lots of life left in it....and ultimately is what really turned me on to these cars. That and I could work on it.....but I just couldn't kill this thing not matter how hard drove it..I was really impressed.
But anyway.... I think having the pleasure of a 900 Turbo for a commuter or "beater" is not a compromise at all. I use my '90 900T in the same manner as you and haul kayaks, dogs, tools etc and feel like its business as usual... without the worry in the back of my mind that something may happen.
Anyway...having owned an 84, 86 and a 90...there really isn't much difference...but just having owned an older 900, it feels like you know something that someone else doesn't.
