my poor little 88 spg has certainly seen better days. mechanically it ran like a champ. transmission shifts just fine. a couple of weeks ago i loaned it to a friend for a few days. unfortunately, the water pump decided to go while he was driving. needless to say, he knows nothing about cars and kept on driving and adding water. his stupidity stretched so far that when the car shut down on him, he believed the "starter" went and push started it. thanks, buddy. i think it's safe to say that i now have a blown head gasket.
the bad: blown headgasket and i haven't found a mechanic yet in storm-recovering new orleans willing to fix it; faded paint, oxidizing clear coat and various dings and dents; 6" diameter hole in floor behind driver's seat, but oddly no rust elsewhere (could the cat converter have burned a hole?).
the good: ran great before. drove it cross country last fall without batting an eye. just replaced seat leather with good used ones.
over the weekend i purchased an '88 TC in much better shape cosmetically but in need of a minor fix or two (rear window motors, top motor, turbo adjustment).
my mechanic skills are of the basic tune up variety, never attempted anything like replacing a head gasket. should i give it a go or rip out some parts and sell them on ebay? i guess there are no worries if i screw it up...
