It needs to be dead centered under the pin. Take out your grill, loosen the two bolts from below, let it float around while setting the pin down into it, then tighten it up.
In fact, it might be good to take latch plate right out and make sure it is thoroughly lubed and moves through its action well. There are quite a few points of friction that can freeze up, not just grease on the tip of pin and on the two wire rods that open.
