I know many people don't and still get good results, but you are saying yours is moving slowly and making too many clicking noises. If you remember, as you disassembled the unit, there was yellowish thick crud that used to be grease. You need to clean that crap out, then regrease the unit, but only regrease the plastic gears and plastic long thingy. Do not oil the mast. That just attracts dirt and grime and thereby slows up the unit. Use graphite instead if you must.
