Saab left me stranded

My 1990 non-turbo was towed to the shop last night.
The ABS light started to come on and then off and back on again. After about ten miles I parked to go into a store. 15 minutes later I came back out to a dead battery. After an easy jumpstart, I noticed the idle bagan to slow down and I was weary of a stall and tried to get to the open road.
But just shortly onto the road, the ABS light came back on, followed by the brake fluid light (the resevoir is full), and the park brake light, and then the check engine light.
I thought the alternator maybe was going bad so I pulled over to then hit it with a big hammer. As I opened the hood, smoke was flowing out from the alternator/ABS area near the firewall.
The car is now at the shop (closed til Monday) and is 30 miles away. Any ideas? Pretty sure the surpentine belt was intact, but I never did a close inspection. Thanks. Tim.
