I'd say your alternator brushes may be suspect. Once you are running try this test. Keep the idle around 1500 rpm or so, and disconnect the negative battery cable, you can loosen the clamp before starting to make it easier. What we are trying to determine is if you are getting a charge out of the system or were running on the battery. If the car keeps running let's load it up, turn the headlights on bright, turn on the AC, the radio and anything else you can think of. If it dies then the the voltage output is suspect. You can get a voltage regulator/brush set and put into the existing alternator.
Also, make sure that the charging light/battery light comes on when you turn the keep to the run position and *before* you turn to start. if the light is not on you need to replace the bulb, do a search on the charging light and it will give you more information. basically if it's not working the alternator will not charge under 2000 rpm. weird science but true.
