Smoke Came From Inside Dashboard

I was having problems starting it (from what I think is bad gas or a clogged fuel filter) and keeping it running so I spent too much time cranking it over which must have caused the wire to the starter to overheat, melt & then smoke. I've got most of the dashboard taken apart but can so far find no obvious section of wiring where it overheated and smoked. What would be the most likely section of harness where the wiring would overheat? Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mark
