hi vvack0matic thanx for your reply the gearbox in the 88 was fitted by the last owner ( a friend of mine) for fuel economy the `long` 5th gear was for cruising I dont know about 1100 rpm at 65 mph but certainly it does 100 mph at around 4000 rpm ..I`ll check this and post back..It may be better than this. the tranny was built for him by a saab shop but i`m sure with standard saab parts, I dont know much about this but a #7 gear seems to ring a bell I may be way off here but thats all I recall
Also cars here in the U.K. were only required cats from 1991 which is why I never encountered them before. i`m wondering if the auto tranny is sucking power from this good car that i have and mebbe swop trans with the old manual box (how hard would this be?) or perhaps the cat is bad at high revs
