Hi Mike,
you mentioned reving for a bit and you can run. if you do that, and then let it idle, does it stop? If so, try holding at about 1500 - 2000 rpm, does it continue? With the key in the run position, but not starting or running, does the light for charging/battery illuminate? If not, that is your problem. Silly Engineers at Saab made that light part of the charging circuit, replace with the correct wattage please (don't rememeber, do a search or get from the dealer - remove the left speaker and you can replace it). My wifes 1987 did this about 10 years ago. ran the battery flat around town. called AAA and they jumped it only to have it die. jumped again to have it die. My wife had called me and I arrived to see it die a third time. Had the wife drive my 900 and I got into hers. AAA guy jumped me, and I kept reving it like you mentioned, jumper off and it ran so I took off for the freeway and 20 miles to home. Wife followed as a precaution. found out later that night from a saab buddy (and a Saab Master too...) about the damn light bulb. If you keep the car running at a high enough rpm it will charge, so that's how I got home (blind luck?). If you run below that without the bulb you are running on the battery...
let us know what you find, it's good for all the guys that just read too.
