I had a similar problem recently and it turned out to be a bad NTC sensor ( it's a unit on the intake manifold that also gets a plug off the harness similar to the injector plugs. In my case the NTC was telling the engine it was cold all the time and flooding the engine with too much gas and it would stall or wouldn't start at all. A new NTC is cheap and to replace is less than 15 minutes.
If you had the car in front of you this is what I would do - : run a length of wire from the positive side of the battery back to the fuel pump - to the connector for the white wire on the pump - the pump is easily accessible and this will test that the pump runs. With the pump running, you can feel and/or hear the fuel running through the fuel rail - so the pump is running, gas flowing, try to start it... if it stalls/floods then disconnect the pump, let it rest, and try to start it with the pump off - to burn off/fire up the gas remaining in the line - if it fires, sputters, dies - you know you're getting gas and spark... reconnect the pump ... if it won't start, you're getting too much gas... and the NTC may be the culprit.
I could, of course, be completely wrong, but this has been my experience.
