89 900t. drove to the store and when i left no start. battery seems good. getting 12.7v across + and - at battery with - cable disconnected. cables and leads seem good. getting all the appropriate voltage at the starter points. i think i may have got a misreading at the field strap because it is difficult to get to. if the reading was right it was too low making me think the solenoid or ground contact was bad. i am getting a significant click when trying to start. thought that maybe battery voltage was good but lacked the cca to start, so i tried a jump. same thing, a click but nothing.
read somewhere if your lights dim when trying to start then the solenoid is engaging the starter. is that true. mine definitely do but is seems more like a cut off until starting not a dimming.
anyway now my questions. if i have to remove the starter to replace the solenoid, should i just replace it all. i am trying to save money but do their life expectancies vary that much or does one usually follow the other in failure. i am saying this assuming that it is only the solenoid. by the way i did the “hammer on it” thing with no luck. and i am pretty darn sure the ignition switch contact is fine. i have read posts here about a ford solenoid addition that may save me the removal of the starter but cant find detailed explanations. i tried to find it on the townsend site but couldnt navigate to the right place. can anyone help me with finding this info. Is this fix even worth doing.
The starter removal looks pretty straight forward but a tight fit for hands and tools. Can anyone tell me if the two bolts at the front of the starter are more like studs, its seems like there is no way to get a wrench on them because of the black plastic shroud covering them. Thanks to all.
