mike, The only significant differences:
inner driver diameter. There will be either two or three raised rings around the shell of the driver. Three rings means it's the early, smaller driver, two rings is the later driver. The tripod bearing on the axle shaft must match the driver. So if the car (axle) has the large tripod and the new transmission has the old, small drivers you'll have to exchange those drivers for the new, larger ones. Your '87 car should have only the larger, late tripod bearings, but if your donor trans. is older it could still have early drivers. (Clear as mud, right?)
Early cars had shift centering at the shift lever housing. Late cars ('88+ I recall) had the centering inside the transmission, so if your donor trans. is post '87 (has centering inside it) then you'll want to disable the centering (at the lever) in your '87 car. Redundant centering can make adjustment difficult.
You may want to count the teeth on the primary drive sprockets and see if you are changing the primary drive ratio. They are all interchangable so you can swap in your old ones or some others if needed.
Trannies from different years and applications will have either a hydraulic front motor mount or solid. The front cover (that you'll remove to count the primary drive sprockets) determines which type of motor mount can be used so you may want to swap that too. Your '87 turbo should have hydraulic motor mounts of course. Some guys prefer the solid front mount and retro-fit them. One model year trans. (only '87 I think) had a bearing on the front end of the input shaft inside the front cover, so if you get into swapping front covers that could be a small problem. Good luck.
