Hi guys, I have had this "rattle" coming from the timing cover area which does not seem consistent with timing chain noise. This noise only comes into play over 2,000 rpm whereas timing chain noise is also at idle.It does increase with revs in the lower gears but it cannot be heard or is barely audible on the open road at 100-130kph. The noise started last July the day after I had the crankshaft pulley changed - I believe it was a rushed job as they forgot to connect up the power steering pump and I lost all the fluid.
If the crankshaft pulley was not put in properly and maybe damaged the woodruff key could you get a "rattle" noise from the end of the crankshaft? Or could this affect the timing chain sprocket and cause the timing chain to maybe behave a little differently? The rattle has been there for nearly 12 months now and has only got louder in the past month or so. Someone suggested big ends but I thought they sounded like someone hitting the engine with a hammer and these enginesa are pretty bulletproof on the bottom end! I only use Mobil 1 systhetic oil every 5000-7000kms although I have only owned the car for 18 mths - it has 260,000 kms Thank a million for your help
