I used to think 8 valve engines more durable than 16v until I got a 16v Turbo. In fact my experiance was the opposite. The 16v engine had no issues at all last 100,000 miles (160,000 km). Now total mileage is close to 400,000 km and the engine runs like a charm. Oil/filters/plugs/wires changes was the only maintenance I had to do. My 8v on the other hand had a number of issues including head gasket and a burned valve. I guess it's a matter of luck but I don't see any reason why 16v engine should be considered less reliable than an 8valver. My $0.02
