So the front of the engine is actually close to the firewall. If your waterpump is going or gone, it will be leaking from the weep hole pretty steadily. Grab the pulley and see if there is any play, if so , then its shot. A/C compressor must be removed, leave connected and just put aside. Also, the back of the waterpump housing has a gasket and a couple of hose connections, you might want to check the hoses, clamps, gasket, etc. while you are in there.
