CMyles, or should it be SIR? I bow to your great knowledge of these cars and your generosity in sharing it, as well as to your clarity in putting things.
This is a question about an old mechanics' "fix" for slipping automatic trannys.
The tip is to add "some" brake fluid to the tranny fluid.
The idea is that the friction-faced plates in what you just named, the drum clutches, wear away over time and reach the point that the stack, alternately friction plates and drum-tumbled plain steel plates, isn't tall enough to lock together any more. (As I get this from looking at pictures, one set of plates is splined to a shaft, every other plate is splined instead to the drum, and when pressure is applied the shaft and drum lock up and drive power.) So, brake fluid softens and swells certain things, including friction linings. The right amount can swell these linings enough to buy a little more life out of a slipping tranny.
Anything you've ever encountered? If so, or if not, does it or could it sometimes work?
I know from your posts that there are MANY MANY things that can go wrong inside a transmission. Just wondering if, if it's the right thing, does the above trick sound like a possible cheesy fix?
We are not worthy.
