1988 Saab Convertible -- Battery/Ignition Troubles

Sunday, I loaned the battery I had in my '88 SAAB convertible to a neighbor suffering from what I presumed was a deab battery. I put it in
her '96 Infiniti so she could go to an Auto Parts Store to get a replacement.
She came back an hour later with my battery and thanks.
I put the battery in the SAAB and then, things started to go crazy.
First, I was not able to turn the engine over. I seemed to be getting
power surges to dashboard elements. Standing still, the RPM guage started
to fluctuate. The dash lights came on...even though the exterior lights
were still in an off position.
I fiddled with the battery connectors -- disconnecting and then connecting
them again.
When I jumped the car, I was able to get it to start, so I drove around
for 15 minutes. When I returned home, I turned the ignition off.
When I went to start the car again, there was no power available...
as if the alternator was not able to charge the battery.
Not certain whether I have triggered an electrical /wiring problem;
an anti-theft feature (unlikely) or damaged the battery somehow
by loaning it out.
Any tips or suggestions will be appreciated.
Regards,
Frank
