Do you have the original factory stereo - with the multicolor LEDs on the equalizer? If so, you gotta have both parts - the radio will not work without the equalizer since the amp is in the eq. Available is just the amp part, without the eq, but it doesn't fix your problem since you want the whole DIN slot available for gauges.
Some later stereos ('88-'90), with the single-color LEDs in the eq, the amp is integrated into the head unit and you don't need the eq, but you need a little jumper cap to "disable" the eq function at the head unit.
If I were you, I'd jump on ebay, drop $90 on a Kenwood MPC-225 or a Pioneer 2800MP and call it a day... $100 for a CD w/ MP3 seems like the easy solution here.
(Avoid the Clarions - good quality, really bad amp RMS)
