Well folks, I worked on the AC again this morning. I also followed the AC FAQ from saabsite.
It looks like this is an intermittent thing (grrrr).
I did use a jump (with fuse) and triggered the compressor clutch manually by jumping to the battery with the engine running. The clutch does engage.
I also checked the ETS. Close circuit.
Finally, I put back the original 9-pin relay, started the car and started AC and no blown fuse.... AC blows cold too...
On the downside, the new 9-pin relay no longer works.... I had pulled it out while the engine was running with AC on as suggested by the saabsite FAQ to check voltages at the relay connector. I probably blew something while pulling out the relay.
Anyway, I'll try out the AC again over the next few days. At least I have a stock of 30A fuses in the car. San Jose weather is hot enough that driving the Saab at midday has to be done with the top up. At least for me :-)
