Erica, Here's what's in that gearbox; A "stack" of rotating, torque conveying components which includes a two level planetary geartrain, the 2 drum clutches, 2 band clutches, a one-way sprague clutch and a torque convertor. Then there is the "control" system; The valve body, govenor, band apply servos, accumulators and about 13 removable pipes to convey the pressurized fluid. There is also the pump and the final drive since this is a transaxle. Externally there is the ATF cooling system, the gear selector mechanism and the throttle cable. When any of the gears fail to engage there is a list of possible causes specific to that problem. If the defect is in the shift control system or throttle cable then the repair is relatively easy. If the defect is in a "control" system component then the repair is more complicated but can usually be done without removing the unit from the car. If there is a "stack" problem then the unit must come out and be disassembled for repair. There is a systematic technique for determining the most likely cause of the problem. In addition, system pressure tests will help identify the cause.
We should have more than "First gear is definately going" to really help much, but here's where you start; Check the fluid condition and level (do this when it's fully warmed up, engine running, in neutral, brake applied). Low or spent fluid is the most common cause of poor automatic transmission performance, especially for first gear. Next, put the car in "1" and start off. At about 13 miles per hour, (while holding the gas pedal steady), manually shift to "2" and feel and for the upshift accompanied by a drop in RPMs on the tachometer. Then at about 24 MPH manually shift into "D". You should feel that upshift and see the tach. drop again. If you can not get all three forward gears this way then a full diagnostic is indicated and remember that if a shift problem is caused by a failed stack element then removal and rebuilding is inevitable. Good luck.
