Looks like I am too late; nevertheless, some thoughts.
1. $1200 would have been a great price for a 89 900S with 165K if it has no rust problems and has a 5-speed.
2. The C900 is a "Real" Saab, the 9-5 is just another GM car.
3. Do you need a hatchback or just a sedan? The C900 hatchback hauls just about anything and everything you could find at garage sales and antique malls.
4. If you'd rethink your decision, take the car to an independent Saab mechanic to identify what needs replacing. Clutch? brake pads? CV joints? CV boots? ball-joints? lower control arms? If you are handy and have the time, they'd cost you about 1/3~1/4 of the mechanic's estimate.
5. Buy the 89 for fun and keep the 9-5 for commute.
