valve lifter/tappet differences

When I replaced my 86T head with a 92 n/a months ago, I discovered some of the 92 lifters had full spring action (a spring inside the lifter pushing the tab down), while some did not. I assumed those without spring action were faulty and would be noisy. Not so, the engine settled down to normal quiet running after warm-up. I still wanted matching full spring lifters and waited for a 92 or newer head to show up at the local j-yard. Last week a 95 900 2.3 engine showed up and I pulled the head apart to get to the lifters. To my surprise, no spring action on any of them, but all the tabs on the bottom did have full free motion. This tells me the earlier spring loaded lifters from the 92 head was scrapped by the designers realizing those springs were unnecessary and prone to failure. So long as those tabs have free motion and aren't gunked up, the internal oil chamber will fill with the proper amount by oil pressure, and the weight of the tabs assisted by gravity, plus the hydraulic seal of the valve stem on the tab bottom is enough to pull it down and reset the level of oil inside the lifter. I took all 16 '95 lifters (for $12 total), drained them of the existing oil, flushed them (needle and syringe) with solvent and refilled with Marvel oil. Looking forward to getting them working in my 92 head.
