The adjusting screw strips easily. I alternate between flexing the e-brake pivot arm to check for play and turning the screw by hand instead of with a ratchet. Last time I even squeezed the piston back in very slowly, only getting around a turn at a time on the adjusting screw, once again, turning it by hand only. The exploded diagrams of those calipers (1988 onward) don't go into that much detail.
