Sung to the tune of Spam Spam Spam!
A very common problem, especially on the hatchback. At a minimum, the ground connections from the rear light clusters are poor. When you press the brake pedal, the current through the brake light bulbs 'raises up' the ground, so the flasher stops working. The flasher relay requires a certain amount of current through the bulb to work. This can also be the problem with the reverse lights.
Step 1 - Remove and examine each light bulb. Make sure that it is the right bulb for that location. Sometime folks put dual filament bulbs in single filament bulb sockets, and vice versa. Make sure they are the right bulb part number, as wattage differences can also cause havoc.
Step 2 - make sure all the contacts are clean and bright. Brighten them up with some fine sandpaper.
Step 3 - Make sure the ground connection is good. That's the black wire from each light cluster to a ground lug on the chassis. Remove the lug, and brighten up the mating surfaces.
Step 3A - if Step 3 didn't do it, you may have to add an additional ground wire. Solder a nice fat (12 gauge is nice) stranded insulated wire to the ground plane on each rear light cluster circuit board, and run it to a nice lug bolted to chassis. Make sure you've cleaned all the paint and rust off the chassis point.
