hi,
I've been patching it from the inside for a while now, but the top on our 88 900tc is finally to the point of needing to be replaced. it was replaced once before in 93, so this one has plenty of years on it. local shop quoted $1,500 with a new rear window.
reading through the archives, it sounds like requesting the Stayfast cloth is the best option from strength and price standpoint. I had a few other questions for the experts:
-since the top has wear points above the c pillar, similar to those described in the Saab Service bulletin listed on the Townsend site (http://townsendimports.com/Web/body_folder/cam313pg1.htm) I want to have those adjustments made by the shop installing the new top, to prevent similar wear on the new one. has anyone had experience with shops being capable/willing to make the adjustments? any chance anyone has the "special adjusting gauge" Saab suggests fabricating that they'd want to loan/sell?
-on the right side, directly above the window, the edge of the top bows out. it looks as if the cable that reinforces the side and gives it shape is separated from the top inside. I'd figure there is a cloth channel that holds the cable in that has ripped, and that a new top will cure that problem. does this sound correct? or would additional "cables" need to be purchased from Saab?
-rear window. of course, it costs a few hundred more to replace this. it has the original rear window glass, as we kept the old one when we last replaced the top. a few years later, I noticed the fabric separating at the bottom of the window. I used sealant to fix it and it's been fine since. but even though the glass and the fabric surrounding it looks good, I'm thinking maybe this time it'd be smart to do the window too. any thoughts?
-is there an alternative to the plasticy "trim" along the outside edge of the top? the one on the last top cracked throughout and looked ugly fast. was hoping to avoid this "quick wear" item this time around, but perhaps it comes that way from the manufacturer.
thanks for any guidance on any or all of the above.
-Brian
