I had good luck with a R134 conversion on my 86 system, but I did do a complete flushing of each component - removed, filled with your choice of solvent like lacquer thinner or acetone, then completely dried with a vacuum hose attachment before reassembly. I also took the compressor apart and cleaned it out and re-sealed the clutch plate o-ring using high temp silicone. I applied the necessary vacuum to the system and then filled with R134. It ran fine for a week, but then one of the valve stems blew out and all the R134 was gone in a flash. I replaced the blown valve stem and refilled with 134, but made sure to put in less than two full cans of 134. 20 oz instead of 24. It seemed to do the trick and that lasted through the summer. It's been three years and all I have to do is refresh with 10 oz every year.
