belt replacement tips?

Sprucing up my '94 convertible for sale (sniff!). Don't want to, but a baby is just 'round the corner and I need to get a nice big, old, easy to work on Volvo.
Anyway, I replaced the voltage regulator just now, and since one of the ancient alternator belts just wasn't coming off even with the adjustment arm fully extended (and I was jonesing to get the vr done after getting my arms and back in knots), I cut it off since I'm going to replace it anyway.
Considering the nightmare that involved just doing this one step, does anyone have any tips for replacing all the belts? I have contis from Eeuroparts, so I'm assuming they're the right size - but I'm worried that I won't be able to get 'em on if the old ones were so hard to get off. Bentley makes it look easy, until you realize that all of their pics are of an engine not living in the engine compartment!
