Coolant system flush help?

OK - so I followed the Townsend instructions and flushed my cooling system tonight - I flushed water through various heater hoses, upper radiator hose, etc for at least an hour, until clear water was flowing out of the radiator drain. Once it finished draining (I thought) I closed everything up and proceeded to pour in the coolant (I read somewhere you should pour in the requisite 50% of coolant first, then top up with water to be sure you have an appropriate mix?) Anyway, I got about 4.25 liters of coolant (MB) in before hitting the lower level on the reservoir. I ran the car a bit (it is too late tonight to let her run until fans come on and such - neighbors would be none too happy)and opened the bleader nut on the thermostat housing until coolant came out consistently. - could I possibly have 4.5+ liters of water sitting in the car after a "flush"?!??! Will running a full cycle (fans cycle on) somehow allow the car to swallow the rest of the coolant (.75 liters left?) + water?
What did I do wrong here?
