any reason to think my problem ISN'T the Starter?

Hi.
Went to start the car yesterday, 88 TC, and got nothing as I turned the switch. came back a half hour later, it started up fine. tried to start it today, radio and instrument lights fine, tried to start it, no noise. if I turn the lights on, they do not seem to dim when it goes to the "start" position.
If I tap the starter with a wrench while starting, it will start. therefore, I'd assume it's certainly the starter. there are a few variables that made me think other things could be involved, including: touch of corosion around positive battery terminal, parking break light remains dimly lit, ignition switch has long been "compromised" such that you could start the car with a house key. so i imagine there are all sorts of electical gremlins that could be playing a role. but would getting it to start by tapping it with a wrench all but confirm it's the starter? car's got about 140,000 miles on it. pretty sure it's the original starter (can't recall changing it over the last two decades).
thanks for any insight.
