1. What is a clutch master cylinder and is it expensive? There is oil dripping near this cylinder.
This is a fairly simple item to replace and run around the $100 mark. The hardest thing is bleeding the clutch, I suggest getting a brake bleeder kit which will make that a easy task.
2. What does it take to bleed air from a clutch line?
You can pump the clutch to build up pressure, as the clutch builds up some pressure hold and crack the bleeder screw and then re-tighten. Repeat this process until both your legs and the person helping you legs are wore out and the new clutch master cylinder is almost worn out. (not really that bad, but seems that way.) I would get a brake bleeder kit, $50 hooks up to resivor, uses air pressure to push fluid through. Bleed the clutch in about 5 min.
3. What do you think of an oil leak near the "rear" of the engine?
Couple of possibilites: gasket between engine block and transmition, rear main crank seal, or seal on the transmition. If it is motor oil I would say the rear main crank seal is the issue, this is not hard to replace but will take a couple hours. Depending on how much it is leaking it may not be an issue as long as you check the oil. The transmition may be leaking and not engine oil which there could be several locations to leak from. Once agian, depending on leak you could be able to get by with checking often and adding as need. Leaks from the tranny could be easy or very tough to take care of.
4. Was this year reliable? Thanks.
I drove my 79 900t for 80k miles with few problems. It is a 25 year old car so you will have problems and the car will need work but there is no reason it can't be a good car. I currently am driving a 76 99 ems 650+ miles week, sure I have to work on it a saturday or two every month but it is a 30 year old car with 260k on the car and 45k since I rebuilt the enigne.
I would get it, but then agian I love older saabs and I enjoy working on them from time to time and there is little that I can't do. Good luck.
