Test drive -- tranny question

I test drove a '91 SPG today. It's in decent shape for a New England car but has many minor issues, most of which wouldn't deter me except perhaps the transmission.
It has 180k miles and got a new factory transmission 3k miles ago. It takes quite a bit of effort to move the shifter over toward 1st/2nd. The shifting itself is smooth, it's just the shifter is sticky/heavy. It also grinds going into 5th. If I paused 4th to 5th it was find but a quick (read: normal) shift caused the grinding.
My former '88 SPG developed a similar 5th gear problem which started after someone borrowed the car and I attributed it to the uninitiated driver forcing the shifter into reverse without lifting the collar and this messed with the linkage/levers (just a theory). Another theory is it was dumped into reverse without letting it spin down first.
If/when I speak to the owner again I'll see if the transmission is under warrantee but if not is this something that can be addressed externally (levers/linkage)? Or are these symptoms to be taken seriously.
TIA,
Doug Fuller
