Though I was a kid I was astonished at the Associated Press newspaper stories the day it came out, that gave as gospel a "hero" description of what happened.
Rough recollection: "He repeatedly dove into the frigid water and swam down to the car in an attempt to make sure everyone was rescued, until he was too exhausted to continue." On and on. And not given as someone's assertion, but reported as if it were gospel fact, without attribution.
I wondered then at the kind of clout that gets that sort of treatment, and I wonder today, how much did they pay to whom to ensure it.
Some day I'll look back at old newspaper microfilm to refresh that recollection.
