frank, You probably got lucky here because if the shims were tied and marked as to their location then it's just a matter of replacing them accordingly. Those shims do indeed set the differential bearing preload and the ring gear backlash and require a skilled Saab mechanic to determine the correct set-up. It's (somewhat) possible that you haven't hurt the bearings or gears by driving without them. Put 'em back and cross your fingers. Good luck.
