I assume you are talking about the two non-ABS styles, so with that in mind...
They do look identical, but the bolt holes one the older one are horisontal and the later style are offset about 30 degrees or so. the later style is said to puch a bit more fluid. You'd have to change the vac booster to use the late style.
I know I have one of the older ones from my 86 kicking arround if you need a picture - I went to the late style to help with my squishy pedal when I went to the 9000 turbo brakes after the hub swap.
