radiator cooling fan - 1985 Turbo

I searched the archives and found a few things. Also consulted my local indy mechanic.
The cooling fans were working fine until the whether warmed up. I used to hear them kick in at stop lights and after shutting down the car. Now, they don't seem to be working at all.
Fuses are fine, I double checked. The one thing mechanic said is check the wiring on the inside of the engine compartment on the left hand side. Sure enough, the connector and little circuit board at the end of the wires (with the little plastic cover over them) is a little corroded around the connectors.
Question 1: Should I be able to pull the wires/plugs out of the little circuit board to clean them off (it's stuck, if that's the case)?
Question 2: What exactly should I do to clean them? Scrape with screwdriver, wipe clean?
Thanks, going on a trip this weekend, and I need my cooling fans!
