Removing convertible hood piston/ram - c900i 93 conv.

Hi - I'm having trouble removing this piston. I have removed seats, interior panels etc, but cannot see where the bolt/clevis pin is which is detailed in my manual...I see the 2 bolts holding the piston to the car body,through a hole in the panel.
Can anyone point to/give me some clear instructions on the best way to remove a piston? Also not sure if its best to have roof up or down (piston extended/unextended) etc?
