diagnosing a dead tachometer?

Hi All,
I've searched through the archives to see how to diagnose a dead tachometer and all the suggestions said to clean up grounds behind the instrument cluster. I've cleaned up one set, but I am not sure if it was the right one? My Bentley shows a grounding point behind the dash and that's the one that I cleaned, but it doesn't seem to help the tach. Is there a ground on the cluster itself? Also, could I really just have a dead tach (I have 255K on this one)? I really don't want to pull the entire instrument cluster... Thanks!
