I did two of my 900's with R134a, they cool quite well and I filled until the bubbles were gone. I filled with a little over 26oz of R134a and 6 oz of oil. The system can handle the higher pressures of R134a as long as the orings are all good. You should replace the orings to ensure that they're good. And you should replace the receiver/dryer to get rid of the old mineral oil and to collect any new moisture that is introduced and not vacuumed out when you're working on it. A new expansion valve is important for getting cold refrigerant.
I just finished a engineering masters class on the subject so I know a little bit about it. R134a will cool just as well as R12 when run at a slightly higher pressures than R12: R134a was designed as a direct replacement for R12 systems.
