Splice probably wasn't "real" fuel hose. I would use the splice method with some good fuel hose.
If you insist on doing it right, you can get the special tool(sort of a clamp) that forces the hard line over the elbow barbs, one at a time. I used a clamp from a tube flaring tool set to hold the tube and was able to do it with a piece of wood behind the elbow and a couple of c clamps to pull the tube over the barbs. I had to undo the whole contraption after every barb. C clamps slipped off...usual kluge cursing.
I met a guy in the paddock at Lime Rock many years ago and we were bsing about the task, and he said that he'd seen pitcrews simply whack barbed fuel connectors into hard lines with a hammer. Not sure I would have the nerve to whack the plastic elbow, but who knows.
