It sounds like the shift coupler might have started to come apart. That's the cheap thing that might go wrong, anyway, so look at that first.
From '92 onwards, the 900 uses the same "dogbone" shift coupler that the 9000 uses (I have a '92 transmission sitting in the garage and was just looking at it). It has a rubber piece that joins two long, flat metal pieces that run across the axis of the shift rod. When the rubber begins to come apart, things like you describe occur. A quick fix, if you can get underneath, is to get a couple of hose clamps (or *heavy* nylon wire ties) and use them to hold the coupler together. I wish I'd known that 9 years ago when the same thing happened to a 900S I had.
The hose clamps can be a long-term temporary solution.
