Good trouble shooting!
A buddy showed this trick to me. Bosche wipers have the two metal strips to hold the rubber wiper in. Get one of those strips and take a file with a good 90 degree edge on it. Then file, with the 90 edge of the file, diagonal parallel lines on the metal strip on one end. do both sides, then file on the other diagonal (so that you have X's on the surface). you are basically making a file.
This is the correct size to put into the connector and move in and out to clean the contacts. It's thin enough that it doesn't bend the contacts apart permanetly and does the job.
cheers!
