The dark secret of DIY AC repair is that most people end up dumping the refrigerant when they have to fix a leak or recharge a system. And a lot of leaks that would be easy to fix don't get fixed because it would mean draining $20-50 worth of refrigerant to get to them. So if there is any easy way to recover, store, then reuse the old stuff, it is a boon not only to the owner-mechanic, but to the environment.
I didn't get into this until after I'd spent and hour on the phone trying to find a cost effective way to get my system drained - best I could find was a shop 30 minute away that would do it for $30. I even called the state dept of the environment to ask them for advice. They said I was the first DIYer they could recall who ever asked them how to dispose of R12 safely - and didn't know the answer, other than call around and see if I could find and AC shop that would take it.
So if there is a simple way to reuse the old refrigerant, why not go for it? I do not understand why you seem to detirmined to put the notion down, while adding nothing more useful to the discussion than sarcasm.
Even if the thought of dumping environmentally harmful gas into the atmosphere doesn't bother you, paying a shop good money to remove the old refrigerant, that they will then sell to someone else, and then having to pay to replace it when the system is refilled, ought to.
