make sure that the ground wire between the alternator case and the block isn't the problem. Charge the battery, run it with all of the accessories on. Check the voltage between the alternator case and the negative battery terminal. There should be a reading of less than 0.05 volts. If it's more than that, the ground wire has frayed down to a few strands internally. Something like a #10 between the alternator case and ground works well.
This isn't to say that alternators never go bad, but it can potentially save you some money.
